What is ISO 45003?

ISO 45003 is the world's first international guidance standard for psychological health and safety at work, published by the International Organization for Standardization. It gives practical guidelines for identifying, assessing and managing psychosocial risks – things like excessive workload, unclear roles, poor leadership support and workplace conflict – so organisations can build genuinely healthy, safe working environments, not just physically safe ones.

Guidance, not a checklist

ISO 45003 doesn't specify a fixed set of controls – it gives you a structured way to think through the psychosocial factors specific to your own workplace.

Designed to sit alongside ISO 45001

It's written by the same ISO technical committee as ISO 45001, to extend an existing OH&S management system to cover psychological as well as physical risk.

Applies to any business

From remote-first teams to shift-based manufacturing, any organisation of any size and sector can use ISO 45003.

Is ISO 45003 certifiable?

ISO 45003:2021 is a guidance document, not a certifiable management system standard like ISO 45001 or ISO 9001 – there's no IndiaAS-accredited "ISO 45003 certificate" to be audited against. What we offer instead is an independent gap analysis and hands-on implementation support against the guidance in the Standard, usually delivered alongside your ISO 45001 certification or surveillance audit, so you get a clear, evidenced picture of how well your organisation manages psychosocial risk.

Published in 2021 by ISO Technical Committee 283 – the same committee responsible for ISO 45001 – it's designed to be used together with that Standard rather than as a stand-alone management system.

Why implement ISO 45003?

Mental health at work has moved from a nice-to-have to a genuine business risk. ISO 45003 gives you a recognised, structured way to manage it, rather than reacting after stress, burnout or conflict has already caused harm.

Meet your legal duty

India employers already have a duty to assess risks to mental as well as physical health. ISO 45003 gives you a recognised way to do that properly.

Cut stress-related absence

Address the unclear roles, unmanaged workload and poor communication that drive burnout, sickness absence and turnover.

Strengthen your ISO 45001 system

Extend your existing OH&S management system to cover psychological risk, closing a gap auditors increasingly ask about.

How we support your ISO 45003 implementation

There's no fixed certification route to follow, so we tailor our support to where you're starting from. Most organisations follow a similar path.

Gap analysis

We assess your current OH&S system and culture against the guidance in ISO 45003 and flag where psychosocial risk isn't yet being managed.

Risk assessment & action plan

We help you identify your specific psychosocial hazards and build a practical, prioritised action plan to address them.

Ongoing review

We help you fold psychosocial risk into your existing ISO 45001 monitoring and management review, so it stays live, not a one-off exercise.

ISO 45003 Support Cost

Because there's no fixed accredited certificate to price, the cost of ISO 45003 support depends on the scope of work involved. There's no single fixed fee – it's usually quoted as a project based on a handful of factors.

  • Number of employees – more staff generally means a wider risk assessment and consultation exercise.
  • Maturity of your existing OH&S system – businesses already certified to ISO 45001 usually need less groundwork.
  • Number of sites and working patterns – multiple sites, shift work or remote teams add scope to the assessment.
  • Depth of support you need – a light-touch gap analysis vs. full implementation, training and ongoing review.

What ISO 45003 covers

The Standard follows the same Plan-Do-Check-Act structure as ISO 45001. Its guidance can be grouped into four key areas:

Leadership and participation
Guidance on how leaders set the tone for psychological safety, and how workers are genuinely consulted on the factors affecting their wellbeing.
Identifying psychosocial hazards
Practical guidance on spotting hazards in how work is organised, how it's managed, and the social factors of the work environment.
Assessing and controlling risk
A way to assess the likelihood and severity of harm from psychosocial hazards, and select appropriate controls, mirroring the risk assessment approach in ISO 45001.
Monitoring and improvement
Guidance on monitoring indicators such as absence, turnover and engagement, and using them to keep improving psychological health and safety.

Common Questions

About ISO 45003

Not in the way you can with ISO 45001 or ISO 9001. ISO 45003 is a guidance document rather than a certifiable requirements standard, so there's no IndiaAS-accredited certificate. We can carry out an independent gap analysis and provide a formal report or letter of conformance instead, usually alongside your ISO 45001 certification.

ISO 45003 is designed to be used within an OH&S management system based on ISO 45001. It extends that system to cover psychological, not just physical, risk, using the same Plan-Do-Check-Act structure.

Costs depend on business size, working patterns and how much support you need. Give us a call for a personalised quote.

No, but it helps. ISO 45003 is written to fit within an ISO 45001 system, so businesses already certified to ISO 45001 usually find it faster and cheaper to implement, since much of the underlying framework already exists.

No, ISO 45003 itself is voluntary. However, India employers already have a legal duty to assess risks to mental as well as physical health under health and safety law, and following ISO 45003 is a recognised way to help meet that duty.

It varies with business size and how developed your existing OH&S system already is. A gap analysis alone can often be completed within a few weeks; full implementation typically takes longer, since it usually involves genuine cultural and management change, not just paperwork.
