What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is the world's most widely used Environmental Management Standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization. It sets out the requirements for an Environmental Management System (EMS) – a structured way of identifying your environmental aspects and impacts, meeting your compliance obligations, and continually reducing the effect your business has on the environment.

A framework, not a rulebook

ISO 14001 doesn't dictate specific environmental targets – it gives you a proven structure for identifying your environmental impacts and managing them systematically, whatever your sector.

Applies to any business

From offices to manufacturing plants, any organisation in any sector can be certified to ISO 14001.

Independently verified

An accredited auditor checks your EMS against the Standard before certification is awarded.

ISO 14001:2026 at a glance

ISO 14001 was revised in April 2026, replacing the previous 2015 edition and building in the climate change amendment issued in 2024. Organisations already holding a 2015 certificate have until April 2029 to transition, and are currently being audited against either edition depending on their certification timing. Like other Annex SL Standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, it's easy to run alongside other management systems you hold.

Certification is carried out by a IndiaAS-accredited certification body, and once achieved, your business can use the ISO 14001 mark on tenders, your website, and your marketing.

ISO 14001 Cost

Prices for ISO 14001 certification will vary based on the size and environmental impact of your business. There's no single fixed fee – a certification body will look at a handful of factors before quoting you.

  • Number of employees – more staff generally means a longer audit.
  • Sector and environmental impact – businesses with higher-impact activities, such as manufacturing or waste handling, typically need more audit time than a low-impact office.
  • Number of sites – multi-site businesses may need more than one audit day.
  • How much support you need – building your EMS from scratch vs. refining what you already have.

Why our customers love us

ISO 14001 for Small Businesses

ISO 14001 isn't just for large or heavy-industry organisations. Small and medium-sized businesses make up a large share of the certifications we issue – and it's often SMEs who feel the benefit fastest, because simple changes to waste, energy and supplier management pay off quickly.

Scaled to your size

The Standard doesn't demand thick policy manuals – an EMS for a 10-person business can be lean, practical, and still fully compliant.

Wins bigger contracts

Certification is often the deciding factor when SMEs compete against larger suppliers for tenders and supply chain sustainability requirements.

Tidies up how you work

Smaller teams often rely on one or two people to know where waste, energy and materials are going. An EMS captures that knowledge across the business.

The requirements of ISO 14001

The Standard uses a structure of ten clauses called Annex SL. These can be grouped into four key areas:

Context and leadership
Understand your organisation, the environmental conditions that affect and are affected by your work, and the expectations of interested parties, so leaders can set clear direction and commitment.
Operational control
Plan and control the activities that create environmental impact, taking a life cycle perspective from raw materials through to disposal, and prepare for environmental emergencies such as spills.
Planning and support
Identify your environmental aspects and impacts, track your compliance obligations, set objectives, and make sure the right people, training and resources are in place.
Performance and improvement
Monitor and evaluate environmental performance and legal compliance, address nonconformities, and use the evidence to drive continual improvement.
