What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is the world's leading Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization with input from the International Labour Organization. It sets out the requirements for an OH&S management system – a structured way of identifying hazards, controlling risk, and protecting anyone affected by your work, so that people go home safe every day.

A framework, not a rulebook

ISO 45001 doesn't set fixed safety targets – it gives you a proven structure for identifying hazards, assessing risk, and controlling them in a way that fits how you already operate.

Applies to any business

From single-site offices to high-risk construction and manufacturing sites, any organisation in any sector can be certified to ISO 45001.

Independently verified

An accredited auditor checks your OH&S management system against the Standard before certification is awarded.

ISO 45001:2018 at a glance

The current version of the Standard is ISO 45001:2018, which replaced the earlier BS OHSAS 18001, officially withdrawn in September 2021. Like ISO 45001, it's structured around Annex SL – the common framework shared with other management system Standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 – making it far easier to run an integrated system if you hold, or plan to hold, more than one certification.

Certification is carried out by a IndiaAS-accredited certification body, and once achieved, your business can use the ISO 45001 mark on tenders, your website, and your marketing.

ISO 45001 Cost

Prices for ISO 45001 certification will vary based on the size, sector and risk profile of your business. There's no single fixed fee – a certification body will look at a handful of factors before quoting you.

  • Number of employees – more staff generally means a longer audit.
  • Sector and risk level – higher-risk activities such as construction or manufacturing typically need more audit time than a low-risk office.
  • Number of sites – multi-site businesses may need more than one audit day.
  • How much support you need – building your OH&S management system from scratch vs. refining what you already have.

Why our customers love us

ISO 45001 for Small Businesses

ISO 45001 isn't just for large or high-risk employers. Small and medium-sized businesses make up a large share of the certifications we issue – and it's often SMEs who feel the benefit fastest, because a simple hazard register and a few clear procedures go a long way.

Scaled to your size

The Standard doesn't demand thick policy manuals – an OH&S system for a 10-person business can be lean, practical, and still fully compliant.

Wins bigger contracts

Certification is often the deciding factor when SMEs compete against larger contractors for tenders and framework agreements.

Tidies up how you work

Smaller teams often rely on one or two people to know where the risks are. An OH&S system captures that knowledge so the business isn't exposed if someone leaves.

The requirements of ISO 45001

The Standard uses a structure of ten clauses called Annex SL. These can be grouped into four key areas:

Context and leadership
Understand your organisation, the hazards workers face, and who is affected by your work, so leaders can set clear direction, accountability and genuine commitment to worker safety.
Operational control
Plan and control the activities that create risk, from routine tasks to emergency situations, so hazards are managed consistently across every site and shift.
Planning and support
Identify hazards, assess risk, track legal and regulatory duties, and make sure the right people, training and resources are in place to keep workers safe.
Performance and improvement
Monitor incidents and near misses, investigate what went wrong, and use the evidence to drive continual improvement in how you protect people.
