What is ISO 22000?

ISO 22000 is the international Food Safety Standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization. It sets out the requirements for a Food Safety Management System (FSMS) – a structured way of identifying and controlling food safety hazards, built around the HACCP principles developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, so unsafe food never reaches the people eating it.

A framework, not a rulebook

ISO 22000 doesn't hand you a fixed set of hygiene rules – it gives you a proven structure for identifying your specific hazards and controlling them properly.

Applies across the food chain

From farms and ingredient suppliers to processors, packaging manufacturers, transport and retail, any organisation directly or indirectly in the food chain can be certified.

Independently verified

An accredited auditor checks your FSMS against the Standard before certification is awarded.

ISO 22000:2018 at a glance

The current version of the Standard is ISO 22000:2018, which revised the original 2005 edition and aligned it to the Annex SL common framework shared by ISO 9001. It combines HACCP principles with Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs) – the basic hygiene and operating conditions every food business needs – and interactive communication up and down the supply chain.

Certification is carried out by a IndiaAS-accredited certification body, and once achieved, your business can use the ISO 22000 mark on tenders, your website, and your marketing.

ISO 22000 Cost

Prices for ISO 22000 certification will vary based on the size and complexity of your food operation. There's no single fixed fee – a certification body will look at a handful of factors before quoting you.

  • Number of employees – more staff generally means a longer audit.
  • Product range and process complexity – more product lines or complex processing steps mean more hazards to assess.
  • Number of sites – multi-site businesses may need more than one audit day.
  • How much support you need – building your FSMS from scratch vs. formalising existing HACCP procedures.

Why our customers love us

ISO 22000 for Small Businesses

ISO 22000 isn't just for large food manufacturers. Small producers, caterers and ingredient suppliers make up a large share of the certifications we issue – often because one retail or food service customer makes it a condition of supply.

Scaled to your size

The Standard doesn't demand thick policy manuals – an FSMS for a small producer can be lean, practical, and still fully compliant.

Wins bigger contracts

Certification is often the deciding factor when smaller producers compete against larger suppliers for retail and wholesale contracts.

Tidies up how you work

Smaller teams often rely on one or two people to know where the hazards are. An FSMS captures that knowledge so the business isn't exposed if someone leaves.

The requirements of ISO 22000

The Standard uses a structure of ten clauses called Annex SL. These can be grouped into four key areas:

Context and leadership
Understand your role in the food chain, form a food safety team, and secure leadership commitment to a clear food safety policy and objectives.
Hazard analysis & PRPs
Carry out hazard analysis using HACCP principles, and put Prerequisite Programmes in place to control the basic hygiene conditions food safety depends on.
Operational control
Control critical points identified through hazard analysis, maintain traceability, and have emergency and withdrawal or recall procedures ready if something goes wrong.
Performance and improvement
Verify and validate your controls are working, investigate nonconformities, and use the evidence to drive continual improvement of the FSMS.

Common Questions

About ISO 22000

ISO 22000 certified means a business has been independently audited and confirmed to meet the requirements of the ISO 22000 food safety Standard.

Costs vary depending on business size and process complexity. Use our instant cost calculator above to get a personalised quote.

No. ISO 22000 is not recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) on its own. FSSC 22000 builds on ISO 22000, adding sector-specific Prerequisite Programmes and extra requirements such as food fraud and food defence, and it is GFSI recognised. Some retailers require GFSI recognition specifically, so we'll help you work out which one you actually need.

Certification can often be achieved in as little as 45 days, depending on business size and readiness.

No, ISO 22000 certification itself is not a legal requirement. You still have separate food safety legal duties, but certification is often a commercial requirement when supplying retailers or food service customers.

An ISO 22000 certificate is valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits to confirm ongoing compliance.
